The remediation and improvement of the Jack Vanny Reserve in Maroubra is nearing completion with the popular green space set to be returned for public use in December, Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson announced today.
"We know how concerned people have been about the discovery of asbestos and we're very grateful for how patient they have been throughout this process," said Mayor Neilson. "We've worked closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and a third party environmental consultant every step of the way.
"I'm happy to say that air monitoring tests conducted at the Reserve have returned clear results. Despite heavy rainfall in October, remediation works have remained on track and the reserve will be soon reopened for everyone to enjoy."
Contaminated material has been removed from the area and a cap has been placed over the site to create a barrier between the bedrock and new soil.
We have refilled the fenced area with clean soil and are in the process of returfing and landscaping the area.
